eSIMs (embedded SIMs)
What is an eSIM?
eSIM stands for embedded SIM, and is a permanently baked chip in modern mobile devices. As compared to a physical SIM, an eSIM takes up less space, is easier to activate and manage, and allows tremendous flexibility by supporting multiple eSIM profiles at the same time. Why should I use an eSIM?
The traditional way to stay connected when traveling abroad is to rely on your cellular provider and use their roaming facilities. This usually comes with expensive roaming fees. eSIMs, on the other hand, provide a highly affordable way to stay connected overseas without spending hundreds and thousands. How does an eSIM work?
Whilst the primary function of an eSIM is the same as a physical SIM which is connecting your mobile device to a mobile network so you can have access to your carrier's services, including voice, text, and data, the way an eSIM works is very different from a traditional physical SIM. With an eSIM, you generally activate your mobile plan by downloading a digital profile using a QR code or an activation code from your provider. Is an eSIM better than a physical SIM?
If you seek convenience, speed, and flexibility, especially during international travel, an eSIM is often the better option as compared to physical SIM. The ability to activate or switch plans without handling a physical SIM card is a major advantage. Another huge advantage of using an eSIM is fast and reliable data when overseas without paying exorbitant roaming fees. Most eSIM plans cost a small fraction of the price you would pay if you used your mobile plan in roaming mode when abroad. How to use an eSIM for travel?
If you travel internationally often, you can simplify your mobile connectivity needs by adopting eSIM technology. To make sure that you will have data connectivity abroad, you can buy your eSIM travel plan online before your leave and activate it immediately upon arrival at your destination. You can also continue to keep your regular physical SIM card in place, which allows incoming calls and messages to continue working even when you are overseas. Just remember to switch off data roaming on your home plan to avoid roaming fees - use your eSIM for data instead. How can RemitFinder help me search for the best eSIM for international travel?
