What are Paysend's fees and exchange rates?

The international money transfer business has many players in it, and there is a lot of competition amongst money transfer companies to win your business. As a reputable and established remittance service provider, Paysend generally offers very competitive exchange rates and relatively lower transfer fees when compared to their competitors. Operating as an online only business without physical branches also helps Paysend keep their operational costs lower and pass the savings on to you.

One way we can put Paysend's claim to good exchange rates and low fees to test is by actually checking their rates and fees for some popular international remittance corridors.

Let's deep dive into Paysend's exchange rates and fees for sending 1000 units of currency for some country combinations. We will also do some helpful calculations along the way that will help us evaluate if Paysend's rates and fees are good.

Country Pair Transfer Amount Exchange Rate* Fees* Payout Mid-Market Rate** FX Markup
Australia to India AUD 1,000 1 AUD = 53.8117 INR AUD 2.0 53,704.07 INR 1 AUD = 54.2127 INR 0.94%

When it comes to fees, Paysend has a very easy to understand flat fee per transaction model. The transfer fee charged is also independent of the amount you send. Below is a list of Paysend's transfer fees*** for sending money in all the major currencies they support.

  • Australia – 2 AUD
  • Canada – 3 CAD
  • European Union - 1.50 EUR
  • Israel – 9 ILS
  • Kazakstan – 199 KZT
  • Mexico – 2 USD
  • Russian Federation – 49 RUB
  • Turkey - 9 TRY
  • United Arab Emirates – 9 AED
  • United Kingdom - 1 GBP
  • United States of America - 2 USD

***Transfer fees as on July 04, 2022

Paysend charges a flat transfer fee that does not depend on the transfer amount.

An important fact to keep in mind is that Paysend's flat transfer fees do not include any other fees - for example, any potential charges applied by the sending or receiving banks. You should check with your bank for any applicable fees before you decide to proceed with your money transfer.

This brings us to an interesting insight on Paysend fees that you may find very useful.

Since Paysend charges a flat fee that is independent of the transfer amount, you will save more money if you send higher amounts with them. To demonstrate how this is advantageous to you, see the below calculation whereby we simulate 3 scenarios to send money from USA to India - first with a transfer amount of USD 1,000, then with USD 5,000 and finally with USD 10,000.

Transfer Amount Exchange Rate* Fees* Payout Mid-Market Rate** FX Markup
USD 1,000 1 USD = 78.3172 INR USD 2.0 78,160.57 INR 1 USD = 78.9392 INR 0.99%
USD 5,000 1 USD = 78.3172 INR USD 2.0 3,91,429.37 INR 1 USD = 78.9392 INR 0.82%
USD 10,000 1 USD = 78.3172 INR USD 2.0 7,83,015.37 INR 1 USD = 78.9392 INR 0.80%

See how we calculate FX Markup

As you can see from the above, the FX Markup charged by Paysend continues to decrease as the transfer amount increases. The reason for this is that the more money you send, the lower the effect of the fixed fee becomes as a percentage markup.

Due to the flat fee model, Paysend's FX Markup continues to decrease as the transfer amount increases. Paysend may, thus, be a cheaper option to send large amounts.

This may make Paysend a great choice for larger money transfers, especially compared to providers that may charge you a percentage based fee which keeps increasing with the transfer amount.

Are Paysend exchange rates good?

Paysend tends to have fairly competitive exchange rates and low flat fees across many of the markets they operate in. You should always check the latest exchange rates and fees using the Paysend calculator available on their website for latest information. This will help you gauge if Paysend is the right choice for your next money transfer.

As evidenced by our case studies for Paysend corridors earlier, and the calculations we did, we notice that Paysend charges an FX Markup anywhere between 0.40% to 2.93%. This is a wide range, but something that is not surprising given that Paysend operates in 7500 country combinations worldwide.

Another useful observation we shared regarding Paysend fees was that since the transfer fee charged by Paysend is a flat fee that is not dependent on the amount, you get to save more if you send larger amounts. The reason for this is that a low, flat fee lowers itself as a percentage as the amount gets bigger.

Paysend exchange rates are competitive in many markets. With low, fixed fees, they could be a great choice for your next money transfer.

Since the global FX market is rapidly fluctuating, we always suggest that you should look at all options before you decide which money transfer company to go with. If you compare various providers, you will be better armed with information that may help you decide which one is best for your needs.

An easy and quick way to compare many remittance service providers is to use RemitFinder's money transfer comparison platform. We present an easy to digest comparison table for you to quickly compare many companies, and hopefully pick the one that suits your needs without spending too much time and research.

Is Paysend a cheap way to send money overseas?

With a low, flat fee structure that is not dependent on the transfer amount, Paysend is certainly a cheaper way to send money internationally.

However, in some markets, the exchange rate offered by Paysend could be lower (as evidenced by our FX case studies done earlier). Since a worse exchange rate also cuts into your recipient's payout, you should do your due diligence when sending money.

But in general, so long as you send money in markets where Paysend provides very competitive exchange rates, they are certainly a very cost effective way to send money overseas.

So long as you get a competitive exchange rate, Paysend's low, flat transfer fees make them a very cost effective way to send money abroad.

Given Paysend's flat fees, you get charged less FX Markup if you send higher amounts. This is due to the flat fee getting spread out thinner over larger amounts.

How do I avoid Paysend fees?

In general, there is no way to avoid paying the Paysend transfer fees. Note, however, that Paysend's fees are generally pretty low and do not vary with the transfer amount. So, even if you send a large amount, you still get charged a low flat fee.

That said, Paysend has a great promotion going on for RemitFinder users whereby your first 3 money transfers with Paysend are free. Take advantage of this great Paysend offer to save even more money on your first 3 transactions!

How much money can I send with Paysend?

When you send money overseas, there are generally limits on how much money you can send in a single transaction, as well as over time periods like a month or a year. Also, sometimes providers also have different limits based on currencies - popular currencies like USD, CAD, AUD, GBP and EUR, etc. can sometimes be sent without limits, while more regulated currencies like CNY, NGN and KRW, etc. may have much smaller limits.

Paysend has a two tier transfer limit model whereby you can send a lower amount by providing minimal Know Your Customer (KYC) information. If you want to send money overseas without any transfer limits, you have to provide additional documentation and information and Paysend will remove your transfer limits after successfully verifying your documentation.

For example, when sending money with Paysend from the US, you can send up to USD 999 or up to 5 transactions (which ever happens first) without providing your Social Security Number (SSN). Note that you still need to provide your name, mobile number, address, email, date of birth and identification documentation. If you provide additional documentation to Paysend, the limits can be raised upon successful verification.

Similarly, in the UK, Paysend allows you to send GBP 800 or EUR 1,000 per 6 months without providing additional identification documentation. To increase these limits, you have to provide additional information.

Paysend allows you to send smaller amounts with lesser documentation. If you want to remove transfer limits, you have to submit additional identification documentation.
